What is resilience?

Resilience is a term which is arguably over-used in the workplace. Building resilience is not a tick-box exercise – it is an active learning process.

At Positive, we think of resilience as the ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. Resilience helps leaders to manage challenges effectively and recover more quickly from setbacks. It allows them to navigate difficult times, without their performance or wellbeing suffering. With the world of work changing so rapidly, leadership resilience has become fundamental to team and organisational success.

Importantly, resilience is a dynamic process rather than a fixed trait. With the right support, anyone can build resilience.

Resilience 2

Why is building resilience in leaders so important for organisations?

Life can be difficult – especially for leaders – and it can often feel lonely at the top. Without the right tools, everyday challenges can quickly have a negative impact on both wellbeing and performance. This then has repercussions for other individuals and teams, as well as the organisation as a whole.

By helping your leaders to develop resilience, you’re giving them the tools to manage whatever the future brings. Resilient leaders have a greater tolerance of uncertainty, make more measured decisions, show greater cognitive flexibility and have higher emotional literacy.

Leaders who demonstrate these core skills are also more effective at positively influencing and motivating others. Our research found that leaders who are perceived as good role models for psychological awareness improve resilience in their workforce by 17% (data from a Professional Services Firm; n=1408, collected Spring 21).

How can organisations build resilience in their leaders?

Our research suggests an incredible 75% of leaders feel they don't have high levels of resilience (data from a Professional Services Firm; n=100, Jan 2022). Fortunately, we can change this. Building resilience starts with improving awareness and understanding. Once leaders are familiar with the foundational science that underpins resilience, they can use practical tools and techniques to address real-world challenges.

Resilience is not something we can build in the absence of challenge or adversity. It's the application of knowledge and tools, that over time can shift patterns of thinking and behaving.

How we work

A scientific approach to building resilience

Cutting-edge science

Science is at the heart of everything we do. We translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical skills that can help your people reach their full potential.

Driven by data

We believe that measurement matters. That’s why we use data to help you track your progress with resilience and psychological skills, as well as the impact of your leaders.

Lasting skills

Progress is only good as long as it lasts. With our programmes, we encourage your people to behave as scientists, experimenting as they go, so they can build skills that last.
